UK legislation does not permit the disposal of CRT screens in Landfill and the Environment Agency now classifies these units as hazardous waste. We maintain a high quality of standard, ensuring compliance with the WEEE directive, along with European Directives, set out to prevent any such electrical goods from entering Landfill sites. Monitors are either fit for re-use in the UK, or sent for recycling.
We are able to offer unique removal of your Computer Monitors, whether they are working, faulty, Analogue, Digital, CRT or TFT. Our service is highly ethical and does not entertain the option of: Illegal Dumping : Export to devloping countries or other continents
Our recycling services will re-deploy your used, working CRT and TFT monitors inside the United Kingdom for re-use as low cost solutions. The main objective is to prolong the life of the CRT/ TFT monitor, preventing it from being removed from the market, hence delaying the disposal of the unit. Faulty units are sent to specialist licensed waste processing plants in the United Kingdom who are able to carry out re-processing and materials extraction of TV and computer monitor tubes.
Under UK and international law it is illegal to export, or allow the export of any redundant computer equipment that is classified as Hazardous waste (in particular CRT computer monitors) outside the EU or to any country that is not a member of the OECD. The legislation governing this is defined in the Basel Convention to which the UK is a signaturary.
Ionizing radiation: CRTs emit a small amount of X-ray band radiation as a result of the electron beam's bombardment of the shadow mask/aperture grille and phosphors. Almost all of this radiation is blocked by the thick leaded glass in the screen, so the amount of radiation escaping the front of the monitor is widely considered harmless. All CRT displays equipped with a vacuum tube based high voltage rectifier or high voltage regulator tube also generate X-rays in these stages. For both X-ray and electrical safety reasons, the set should never be operated with the cover of the high voltage cage opened.

We are registered with the Environment Agency as a licensed waste carrier |
The implementation of the Landfill Regulations and the introduction of the new Hazardous Waste Regulations and the WEEE Regulations (which came into force in January 2007), resulted in CRT monitors being officially classified as hazardous waste, and therefore not suitable for disposal in the general waste stream. DEFRA have issued relevant guidance over the implementation of the proposed regulations.
A large proporation of the UK's computer waste sent for recycling is re-sold to developing countries. We will not entertain this idea becuase:
Not all your used screens will be working. Usually, faulty CRT tubes shipped to devloping countries are dumped in landfill or broken down by hand.
If your screens are re-used in the UK, they can be returned to us if they develop a fault. Strict European legislation prevents the dumping of these units in Landfill meaning that their recycling can be strictly controlled.
When shipped to devloping counties, units found to have screen burn, scratching or faults in the tubes are simply discarded in landfill or dismantled by hand.
Developing Countries have no health and safety legislation or Environmental guidelines in place for the safe handling and processing of hazardous waste.
Many Waste IT exporters operate illegally either inside or outside the UK. Strict border controls should be adhered to so as to avoid prosecution of the exporter and producer of the waste.
